La Janais - Things to do and see
Around the Region
If just relaxing by our pool is not enough for you there are loads of things to go and do and see within easy
distance of La Janais such as:
|
We have loads of brochures and information available on site to help you plan your activities and most towns have a friendly Tourist Office where you can discover hundreds of more things to do and places to go...the only limits are your energy levels!
One local place we always advise people to visit is Vioreau. This is a local reservoir within a 20 minute drive and every year a fresh man made beach is installed and in the high season there are life guards to monitor the various designated depth swimming areas, boat hire, a beach shop, showers, toilets, shaded picnic areas within the bordering forests, quiet walks around the perimeter, a café/bar restaurant and loads of parking...in fact many of our guests never ever bother driving all the way to the coast after experiencing Vioreau.
Further afield
For those in need of some real cosmopolitan ‘retail therapy’ why not visit Nantes, the capital city of the Loire Atlantique Department, approx 50 miles away, Rennes with it’s mix of medieval architecture and modern shops, approx 50 miles away, Angers with it’s diverse mix of shops, it’s historical castle which has the biggest medieval tapestry in the world on display and it’s breathtaking cathedral...and while you are there pop into the Cointreau museum for a tour and a taste!
If you fancy a day at the seaside just over a hour away you will find the beautiful and seemingly endless beach at La Baule......in the high season it can be very crowded with the ‘beautiful people’ as many Parisiens like to go there......and because they do you will find many designer goods shops and a casino where you can treat yourself to the latest fashions and maybe win a few Euro’s to pay for them!
Or if something a little quieter is more to your liking just a little further along the same coast you can find smaller undeveloped beaches and coves so you can be ‘far from the madding crowd’.
Whilst you are in that area, if you have any interest in WW2 history the famous port of St Nazaire is close by where the infamous U-Boat pens are located and the famous and daring raid was made by the British Commandos aboard the HMS Cambletown in 1942 to blow up and disable the dry docks so the German battle ship Tirpitz could not continue to operate and destroy the allied Atlantic convoys bringing vital supplies to and from America.
There is a lovely beach at St Malo...it’s an easy hour and three quarter drive away...plus you have the bonus of the historical and beautiful walled town to explore and visit with all it’s shops and cafes.
Our personal favourite nearby seaside place from here is Carnac...about 2 hours away by car and on the right day the beautiful Atlantic beaches that stretch right along the peninsular road leading to Quiberon offer some brilliant surfing. Interested in ancient history?....Carnac can boast probably the biggest Neolithic site in the world where you can go and see thousands of standing stones and Dolmens...and along the other sheltered side of the peninsula you can go and see the oyster farms and discover little sheltered coves and nice little bars to sit and people watch...indeed, Pat and I like it so much around this area we hope to eventually retire there.
Feeling even more adventurous?.....why not consider Paris, about an hour and half away by train from Angers which just about makes it doable in a long day or if you are a really determined you could drive there, it’s approximately 350 Kms (each way!)...so it’s probably better to have at least a one night stop over in ‘gay Paris’ as well to make the long drive worth while......and then there’s the Euro Disney theme park to consider located just on the outskirts of Paris...it’s expensive to get in so you really need a full day there to get the very best value from your tickets.
Or you could head south and visit the historical theme park of Puy du Fuy with it’s pageants and re-enactments and the grand firework finale or further in the same direction you have the famous FuturoScope theme park with it’s sci-fi buildings and attractions.
Interested in motor sport?
I certainly am and I am also a very active and passionate motorcyclist even though I’ll never see 40 again, what is it they say...’men just grow out but not up!’
We are located just over an hour from the world famous motor racing town of Le Mans...(apparently it’s got a lot of historical buildings as well by the way!). We did have a lady call us and ask if we were really ‘just over an hour from Le Mans’ or would her husband ‘need to use Concorde to do it in that time’...well, I am pleased to relay that her husband did stay with us and he was a lively 71 year old riding his BMW motorcycle...he did the journey from La Janais to Le Mans in 1 hour and 20 minutes...but that did include a petrol stop whereas another younger guest on his Honda Fireblade motorbike did the same route on the same day in 50 minutes!..indeed that wasn’t just fast that was definitely ‘low flying!’
Anyway here are some dates for your diary:
Also for the dedicated ‘petrol head’ there is a large museum at Le Mans dedicated to the history of motorsport. |
