La Janais

‘La Janais’ is surrounded by beautiful, unspoilt countryside. There are local chateaux, magnificent churches and many grand old buildings for those with an eye for classical architecture to visit and enjoy.

Most towns have lively and colourful outdoor markets at least once every week where you can buy fresh local produce, immerse yourself in the real sights and sounds of rural France and have a coffee at the pavement café’s. If you fancy a day on the beach La Baule can easily be reached in just over an hour, or there is a man-made beach at a local reservoir about 30 mins away with supervised bathing in high season.

It’s easy to forget that England is just a few hours away and long weekends are a realistic option. Close by are Chateaubriant, Nantes, Rennes, Angers, Redon, Laval and Vitre each offering their own blend of shopping, history and attractions to satisfy all tastes and interests. And, if you are a motorsport fan, Le Mans is an hour away so ‘La Janais’ can be your quiet oasis away from all the noise and activity either pre or post race.

For those seeking activity you can swim, sail, go fishing, play golf on many different courses, go horse-riding, shoot clay pigeons or cycle in the miles of tranquil country lanes that surround us…we can even hire you a bike if you don’t bring your own! But if your holiday is just about relaxing why not have a few lazy days sunbathing around our pool or gently exploring the quiet countryside filled with traditional villages and hamlets and virtually no traffic.

Some welcome shade under our trees

‘La Janais’ is located on the edge of the world famous Loire Valley wine growing area so you can visit and taste before buying wine directly from the local growers. Our best known local wines are Muscadet, Gros Plant, Anjou Rosé and Gamay, the quality and the low prices are a very pleasant bonus.

When you need groceries for that picnic or barbeque there are local shops and supermarkets offering a vast range, variety and choice of produce just a few minutes drive away. And don’t forget that beautiful French bread; most villages have their own boulangerie with those exquisite patisseries!

If the kids have a good holiday we believe the parents will have a great holiday

Exactly like we say, if the kids have a nice time, you’ll relax and have a great time so to help that happen we have a range of games and toys for the small and not so small children in your household to enjoy. We have some hire bikes for grown ups but childrens’ bikes are complementary. All our toys and games are free to use…we do however take a deposit for some items of equipment which on safe return we re-imburse in full…that way we do not have golf balls, footballs, basket balls etc being launched out of sight in all directions around the place!....all we ask for is your co-operation, support and understanding that you keep an eye on your children so any breakages to toys and equipment are purely accidental and through fair wear and tear not deliberate abuse and that during their fun they do not interfere with other guests who may be staying with us and just want some quiet time.

We have a ‘quiet garden’ up by the pond which we encourage parents to ask their children to avoid and to play in the large public garden around the swimming pool...it’s about the size of a football pitch so lack of space is not an issue... that way we can ensure everybody gets the holiday experience they planned for, again, many thanks for your co-operation.

Taxi Service

The last thing you feel like doing at the end of a long day is getting back into the car or onto the bike and having to drive to a restaurant...and besides...if you are driving you cannot drink so much wine as everybody else which is just not fair!....so for groups up to 4 and for a small fee we can offer a taxi service within a 20Kms radius of La Janais.

Why only 20Kms?.....well, when we are serving evening meals to our other guests I am the waiter so Pat cannot afford for me to be off site too long!

On site licensed bar for guests

For guests dining with us we have a fully licensed bar so you can enjoy a pre dinner aperitif or a post dinner digestif to accompany your coffee so there is absolutely no need to worry about drinking and driving.

We have now started making our own Cassis using our own blackcurrants, we also make an ‘aperitif du maison’ which one American guest wants us to bottle and export to them...they asked for the recipe but I told them it is an old family recipe and that if I told them I’d have to shoot them!...so they were just happy to drink it after that!

The wine we serve from the bar and to accompany your dinner is all local wine from a vineyard that is located almost on the bank of the Loire...indeed when we go there to stock up...always a delightful experience as they ply us with lot’s of their latest cru’s...you can look out of one window and see the grapes growing whilst out of the other window you can see the Loire river.

....and the local Calvados?....uuuummmmmm!

Evening Meals

Pat hates it when I tell people she is a great cook...but when you get here just have a look in our visitors book and you’ll see that it isn’t just me who thinks so!

We serve a 4 course meal which includes a complimentary aperitif before dinner, a bottle of wine between two, and coffee afterwards which many people enjoy drinking on the patio watching the sun set...our life?....it’s a tough job but somebody has to do it!

Centrally heated, lashings of hot water and the pool

In 2002 we made a significant investment in having a gas powered central heating and hot water system installed...we call it the ‘Nuclear Reactor’ because to just call it a boiler is an understatement...this thing is HUGE! This means that all our B & B rooms, the bar/lounge and the dining room are warm and inviting even in winter so if you fancy an out of season break a warm reception is guaranteed in every way possible now!....and during the summer we have fans to help you stay cool...it gets VERY hot here...but there is always the pool to cool off in. The pool is solar heated so it is cool enough to be refreshing but not so cool that only ‘hardy types’ like to get in it...normally it hovers between 20 and 25 degrees C.....during the summer of 2003 (45°C in the shade here...phew!)...we had to disconnect the solar heating as the pool was getting hotter than the showers going way over 30°C!

The gites have a mix of woodburners, electric radiators, mobile gas and paraffin fires for the cold periods of the year. The whole of La Janais’ hot water is fed from ‘The Reactor’...it is hot and plentiful.
